A brand new Berrier

Heather is officially my hero.

I think that birth and babies are fairly amazing in general, but it takes a lot for a person to be absolutely exhausted, having had contractions for several days already, running on very little sleep and lots of pain to push for hours and deliver an almost 10 pound baby. Well, 9 pounds 9-3/4 ounces, 21-1/4 inches to be precise. Nathaniel (however they end up spelling it on the birth certificate) Theodore arrived last night around 6:00 PM after a very long labor. No wonder he didn’t want to come out, he was enormous! But he arrived without a C-section, which I thought was pretty spectacular. Ten pounds… ouch, that’s a lot of baby!

We arrived at the hospital around the same time, but I got sent away while Heather and Nathaniel were attended to. I’ve always wanted to go to the Block at Orange, just not under those circumstances when I’d rather be at a hospital

It’s funny. You grow up with a person and do all sorts of things with them. You’re best friends and have slumber parties and go through all of the normal ups and downs. You go off to college and get to be roommates, you’re at each other’s weddings, but nothing quite prepares you for seeing your friend with her first baby. He was just beautiful. And perfect. And really big. It amazes me that and hour and a half in the world and he was nursing like he was born knowing how to do it. It was just… incredible, seeing the two of them with Joel standing by. One little tiny person that’s been covered up by maternity shirts for many months and two utterly exhausted adults. He’s a real person! And he’s here! A little tiny human being with ears and little hair and a nose that scrunched up while he nursed. I don’t think I’ve seen anything that amazing-in-an-incredible-makes-you-want-to-cry-for-the-sheer-joy-of-it in a long time.
